Celebrating unity

Unity in the Community event in Hudson Bay Saturday

Mar 1, 2024 | 11:09 AM

A fun cultural event is coming to Hudson Bay this weekend.

Hudson Bay Metis Local 114 is hosting Unity in the Community at Brooks Hall on Saturday, Mar. 2., which is free to attend.

Local president Marilyn Ekert told northeastNOW they got the idea from a similar event from the Metis Local in Porcupine Plain last year.

“The idea is to have…kind of a snapshot of the community,” Ekert explained.

Cultural foods and displays will represent Ukraine, Italy, Portugal, South Africa, and the Philippines, in addition to Metis and First Nations.

“They’re all very excited for this and it’s so neat to see,” said Ekert.

According to Ekert, the organizer of the South African display was honoured to be given the opportunity to present their cultural food to Hudson Bay.

The grant obtained through Metis Nation of Saskatchewan is for early childhood learning, so Ekert said the event will focus strongly on the youth. Each cultural table will educate the youth of the area about their ethnic background.

A Metis Women group and Elders will also be on hand with a table and to give speeches, and the museum will be represented at the event as well.

It’s not just about delicious food, however. The event will also feature a Creeland Dancers Performance, followed by performances by the Hudson Bay Ukrainian Dance Group and the Porcupine Plain Filipino Dance Group.

Music throughout the day will be provided by the Dean Smith Band from Prince Albert.

Jason McKay, the ‘Wandering Metis’, will emcee the event.

Doors open at 11:30, with the opening ceremony and speeches beginning at noon. The RCMP, Scouts, and other organizations will be part of the opening ceremony.

Ekert said the high school travel club will set up tables and chairs, and help with the setup and cleanup as they continue to raise money for their next trip. The Scouts will also be helping throughout the day.

Everyone attending will get a free entry for one of the door prizes.

Ekert said the event should be a lot of fun.

“The idea is to just gather all of the diversity of our community together under one roof for an afternoon and enjoy each other’s company.”
