Red-hot Mustangs welcome Bombers for final meeting of the season

Mar 6, 2024 | 2:34 PM

The Melfort Mustangs only have four games remaining on their schedule for the rest of the regular season, all of which will come against divisional opponents, with three being played at home.

Melfort, who is red-hot right now, riding a six-game win streak, will welcome the Flin Flon Bombers to town on Wednesday night.

“I think we’ve had this one marked on our calendars for a while and then coming back here, I think they shut us out last time. So I think we’re going to be firing on all cylinders and I think we’re gonna have a somewhat healthy lineup back in. I think we’re gonna be ready to go and come up with a big win,” said captain Leith Olafson.

Flin Flon is still the number one team in the standings, which they clinched a little while ago, but Melfort has beaten them in two of their five matchups so far.

This will be the sixth and final meeting of the season between these two clubs.

“I think it’s just our energy and sometimes it’s just a few puck bounces and hitting some goalposts sometimes. I think just be on the right side of it with the right energy and we’ll be good to go,” Olafson added on how to come out ahead.

“Big four games coming up starting with this one against Flin Flon, were two points ahead of Battleford, so I think just getting this win this week and then rolling into the weekend, I think it’ll be big for us in the standings and give us a good spot in playoffs.”

The Mustangs are coming off that weekend sweep of the North Stars, which now has them two points ahead for second place.

Likely, every game the rest of the way will heavily effect their positioning, with the hopes then can head into the postseason, winners of their final 10.

“You can’t look too far ahead, but I think we’re all all looking to win out here and give ourselves the best possible chance to have a good spot in the playoffs,” Olafson told northeastNOW.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace.
