Mustangs look to end Hawks season tonight in Melfort

Mar 8, 2024 | 3:15 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are hoping to play spoiler on Friday night when they welcome their most hated rivals to town.

Melfort will play host to the Nipawin Hawks tonight, as they’ll have a chance to end their season.

The Hawks are needing some losses from Estevan and Kindersley the rest of the way, while also needing to win out to make the postseason.

“They’re gonna come out with their hardest, they want to make that playoff push and we’re just going to try and end that, so that’s what the goal is tonight,” said Ryan Duguay. “It feels a lot better, we’ve gone at it the last couple of years, we don’t really like each other too much, so ending their streak would be really nice for us.”

The Mustangs have been on a streak of their own, as they’re winners of their last seven games.

That’s included four straight games where they’ve only had nine of their regular forwards in, but by the sounds of it, that’s gonna change tonight.

“It’ll be nice you, my first couple of games back, running three lines is a bit tough, so getting all the boys back, it’s gonna be good for our team and all the guys, so it’ll be good,” Duguay added.

After the Stangs’ last three wins over top-three opponents, they have now firmly positioned themselves in second place.

They will need to keep winning if they want to lock that up, as Battlefords and Humboldt are still hot on their tail.

Despite the Blue and Green’s final three games coming against non-playoff teams, they’re not taking anything for granted.

“We got to treat it like we played Flin Flon, just treat every team the same and it should go our way. No team is an easy win in this league, so just keep pushing every night the same way every time,” Duguay told northeastNOW.

This will be the sixth and final matchup of the season between the two bitter rivals, with the Mustangs currently holding the edge three games to two.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.
