Tisdale passes budget with 1% tax increase

The Town of Tisdale has passed its budget for 2024.

Council approved the budget at last night’s meeting.

Homeowners will be paying a little more in taxes this year, as the budget features a one per cent tax increase.

Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Brad Hvidston told northeastNOW the town tried to keep the tax increase palatable.

“Especially with the rate of inflation and interest rates and everything going on right now it was important for council to try to keep as low a tax increase as they could,” explained Hvidston.

He said the town started an asset management plan about 15 years ago and they have tried to maintain it by keeping up with water lines, paving, and other improvements along the way.

“Overall, the plan has been working very well and we’ve seen some really good improvements over the years.”

Among the money dedicated to improvements this year is $938,000 toward new curbs and paving and $93,500 in water line replacement.

The continued rehabilitation and improvements to Heritage Road will continue this year. The road, which stretches from Highway 3 to 110th Avenue, or the hospital corner. Hvidston said the town has tried to improve the road a little bit each year.

“What we’re trying to do is eventually get it so that it’s paved all the way from one end to the other,” explained Hvidston.

The town will be excavating and re-basing a portion of the road in 2024, so it can be ready for paving. That is expected to take place next year.

The budget also featured $580,500 in debt reduction. Hvidston said it’s always nice to work with as little debt as possible.

“We’re paying down the debt on our long-term care facility and Healthplex, and then a big sewer project a few years ago,” Hvidston said.

The town is not doing any new borrowing for 2024.
