An athlete from Melfort has the finish line in sight in her quest to complete all six marathon majors.

Robyn Luthi has completed five of the six majors, and recently received word that she was accepted into the New York Marathon Nov. 3.

Luthi told northeastNOW she was very excited to get that notification.

“I feel like this is all finally coming together, and I’m super pumped to be running my sixth star in New York,” Luthi said.

She added completing the six major marathons would be a huge accomplishment for her, and it’s something she’s worked extremely hard for since 2018. Luthi said the six stars would be a major bucket list item.

“It’s been an absolute dream to say I got to complete all of these races and I just hope it’s an inspiration for other people that even when you’re in your early 40’s you can certainly set new goals and start new things.”

The New York Marathon isn’t taking place for nearly eight months. but Luthi will remain busy with training during that time. She said the marathon cycle training usually happens about 16 weeks away from a race.

“I do have two half-marathons already lined up for this year, just to keep my fitness level up over the summer,” explained Luthi. She will be running the Saskatchewan Marathon’s half-marathon in May in Saskatoon, and the Queen City Marathon’s half-marathon in Regina in September.

The New York course is a challenging one, and Luthi knows she’ll have her work cut out for her. The course is a hilly one that rivals the Boston course, and Luthi said if she wants to run the course in under three hours, she must make sure her training is spot on.

Preparing for a hilly course isn’t easy for a runner from Saskatchewan, as there are few hills to simulate what will be encountered on race day. Luthi said that could mean more time on her treadmill with the incline jacked up or finding time to drive to an area with hillier terrain.

“Other times I just have to adjust my workouts and do more repeats just to get used to using muscles and tired legs,” Luthi explained.

The New York Marathon usually features around 50,000 runners and crowds of over two million people.
