Peter Beatty returns as Chief of PBCN

Apr 10, 2024 | 12:32 PM

Just over three years after announcing retirement, Peter Beatty has been re-elected chief of Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation.

According to Tuesday’s election results, he received 969 votes, which was over a 100 more than the runner up Ovide Michel. The incumbent, Karen Bird, finished fifth.

Beatty was first elected to council in 1993, before being elected as chief in 2013.

In March, 2021, he stepped down and among the reasons cited for paNOW was a personal desire to spend more time with family.

During his previous time in office, Beatty was a part of a number of projects and developments, including the PBCN taking control of both its family and health services in 1995.

In 2019, Beatty was also a part of the opening of a new ten-room boarding house.

The Senator John Morin Memorial Building Hostel hosts PBCN members from the North while they’re in Prince Albert for medical appointments and is located on the Chief Joseph Custer Reserve.

paNOW plans to reach out to Chief Beatty for comment.

In addition to the chief election, there was also 14 councillor positions up for grabs and the electoral officer, has advised those results will be made public in the coming days.
