Mustangs Friedt-Mohr commits to University of Regina

The Melfort Mustangs have announced that one of their best defencemen has found his home for next season.

Twenty-year-old, Chase Friedt-Mohr, has committed to the University of Regina and will suit up as a Cougar as early as this fall.

The native of Prince Albert is in his first season with the Mustangs this year and is excited to continue to stay close to home.

“I’m super excited, Regina has kind of been talking to me right from the start of the year, so as I kind of went through my options, it was kind of a no-brainer to stay in the province and continue my education in Regina, as well as my hockey career… I’m very pleased with the decision,” he told northeastNOW.

“I’ve been away for the past three and a half years down in the States, so it’s always nice when you come back home and the option is there to stay, it’s awesome for myself and awesome for my family to be able to get down there as well to catch games and visit.”

Prior to joining Melfort ahead of the 2023/24 year, Friedt-Mohr spent parts of three seasons with the Spokane Chiefs and parts of two seasons with the Tri-City Americans, both of whom compete in the Western Hockey League.

He excelled in his first season in the SJHL, finishing tied for second in points among defencemen in the regular season, later being nominated for the league’s Defenceman of the Year award.

So far through the nearly first two rounds of the SJHL Playoffs, Friedt-Mohr is tied for sixth in points among all skaters, while leading all defencemen in that same category.

“Chase’s commitment to the University of Regina Cougars is very well deserved. His work ethic and dedication on and off the ice have been outstanding this season and he has put all the work in to make this happen,” added Mustangs head coach, Trevor Blevins.

“Not only are the Cougars going to have a great player on their roster, but more importantly, they are getting a quality individual in their program. Chase is an individual of high character and respect and they are lucky to have him to build their program around.”

Friedt-Mohr is planning to start his education with an Arts and Science degree, before potentially moving into Education or Law.

“Just talking to their coach, it seems like a really well-orchestrated program and that I’ll kind of fit their mould in the way that they play. Also, everything I’m looking to go into in my education side of things is right up there with what I want to do, so I really have just kind of a perfect match in all scenarios,” he concluded.

“I knew my last year of Junior hockey I wanted to play closer to home and was beyond excited to be traded to Melfort. Trevor (Blevins) provided me with every opportunity to succeed this year and I ran with it, so I would like to thank the entire Melfort organization, the most supportive Mustangs fans and hands down the best billet family.”

The University of Regina Cougars compete in Canada West, which is a division of U Sports. Friedt-Mohr was ineligible to go down to the States and compete in NCAA, due to his prior experience with the WHL.
