Mustangs riding high heading into Game 1 of SJHL Finals

Apr 19, 2024 | 1:35 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are feeling good right now, as they’re just hours away from Game 1 of the SJHL Finals against the Flin Flon Bombers.

With just two days off after their Game 7 OT win over the Humboldt Broncos, including a long travel day on Thursday, Melfort hopes to carry the momentum into the Whitney Forum where they will face a team that hasn’t played hockey in 10 days.

“We’re ready and this is a big step for us, so we’re excited. Game 7 was a big game for us, so we want to stay on that high and hopefully bring it into this game,” said Mustang’s forward, Ryan Duguay.

“Our preparation hasn’t changed, we just need to keep it simple, play like it’s just another day and another game, and then it should go well for us.”

The Stangs haven’t played in the Whitney Forum since Nov. 29, which the Bombers won 4-2.

“It’s a different atmosphere here, it’s called the zoo for a reason, so it’s gonna be fun. A little bit different for us but we’re excited about it,” Duguay added.

“They haven’t played a game in a while and we’re just coming off a big game seven on a high, so we still got our legs under us and we want to use that to our advantage. We also haven’t played them in a while and we’re different teams now, they’re playing really well, so we have to be at our best.”

The seventh meeting of the year will be the first playoff matchup between the two clubs since the 2016 SJHL Finals, which the Blue and Green took on home ice.

Game 1 starts at 7:30 p.m. Manitoba time, with the Suncrest College pregame show scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on 105 CJVR.
