An overtime goal away

Mustangs comeback falls just short as Bombers force a Game 5

Apr 26, 2024 | 5:59 AM

The Melfort Mustangs were one goal away from an SJHL Championship on Thursday night, as the SJHL Finals needed extra time for the second consecutive game.

Aidyn Hutchinson had the game on his stick in the dying seconds of the third period, but couldn’t get the handcuffed rebound attempt off, while Chase Friedt-Mohr was robbed on the powerplay early in the overtime frame, by the glove of Harmon Laser-Hume.

That opened the door just enough for the Flin Flon Bombers in Game 4, as they try their best to dig themselves out of a 3-0 series hole, with a 4-3 OT victory.

“It hurts to lose, but we were up three games to none and now it’s three to one. You have four chances to crack it right, so we have to have a quick mindset, we’re going up tomorrow and we’re gonna get ready, we’re gonna get focused and we’re gonna go win in Flin Flon,” Tye Scherger told northeastNOW.

“We were close to closing it out on home ice, but we didn’t get the job done and that missed assignment down low is how they scored.”

Kylynn Olafson extended the Bombers’ season as the series now shifts back to the Whitney Forum on Saturday night.

In games one and two, the Mustangs had success on the road, outscoring Flin Flon by 13-3.

Unfortunately, the fourth one is always the hardest to win, so they have to bring it if they want to avoid a Game 6 at the Palace on Tuesday.

“The big thing in our mindset and our team is that you never lose two in a row, so we’re going to Flin Flon and our mindset is that we’re going to win it there,” added Scherger.

“We want to make sure that we play like we did in the second half of the game, definitely not the first. You can never start like that if you expect to win, and especially going into the Zoo on Saturday, we have to come out flying on all cylinders.”

The start of the game was what cost Melfort, as they were down 3-0. They had to mount a miraculous comeback to send the match to a fourth period. Ryan Duguay scored with a minute and one second left to tie it at threes.

Unfortunately, it was all for not, as previously mentioned, a Game 5 is confirmed, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saskatchewan Time on Saturday.
