Mustangs with another chance to win league title, this time on the road

Apr 27, 2024 | 2:27 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are still in the driver’s seat ahead of Game 5 of the SJHL Finals, against the Flin Flon Bombers.

Melfort is now on their second of four cracks at the cup, this time on the road in the Whitney Forum.

After a 4-3 overtime loss on home ice in Game 4 on Thursday, the Mustangs are now focused on the process and getting back to a full 60 to come out on top.

“We didn’t get the job done at home, so coming on the road, it would be awesome to get a championship here in the Zoo. Honestly, our group isn’t really thinking of the end result right now, we’re just going to take it one period at a time, try and go in there and work as hard as we can, and ultimately if we do that, we should get the job done,” said defencemen Chase Friedt-Mohr.

“Until the second-period media timeout in Game 4, we didn’t play well, so we’ve got to come out here and we’ve got to be the heavier team to start the game and dictate the pace of play, which we’d done for the first three games.”

The Stangs were down 3-0 in that contest but rallied back to send it to overtime.

D zone coverages and forecheck pressure weren’t up to standard to begin, which is something they won’t let happen again tonight.

“It starts in the D zone, if you keep the puck 200 feet away from your net, chances are it’s not going to go in your net, so starts with getting pucks and deep, grinding down their D, making them tired and making them make mistakes, and that’s kind of where we’re going to capitalize on our opportunities to get this done,” Friedt-Mohr added.

“We wanna protect the house, make sure Venne can see everything in front of him because he’s such a great goalie and we know he’ll stop anything he can see. Our goal tonight is to commit to the D zone and get the job done.”

Every game in this series has gone to the team that has scored at least 4 goals.

That could once again be the target score whether it’s keeping your opponent under or getting equal or more of your own.

Puck drop is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Saskatchewan time and can once again be caught on CJVR.
