Lead cut in half

Mustangs margin of error continues to shrink as Bombers force a Game 6

Apr 28, 2024 | 1:27 PM

The Melfort Mustangs have now lost two games in a row for just the second time this postseason, as the Flin Flon Bombers have begun to climb back in this Finals series.

What was once a 3-0 lead, has now been cut to 3-2, as the Bombers forced a Game 6 in Melfort on Tuesday, after a 5-2 victory on Saturday.

“It comes down to grit, the want and the heart, Flin Flon had second and third efforts tonight, while we just had one, so obviously, they won,” explained assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“Towards the end, we were just one shot away, but in the third period, you got to dig deep, find that extra groove, get it deep, bang their D, get the puck moving, shoot everything on net and crash the net, but obviously we didn’t do that.”

For the fourth time in five games, it was the Bombers who opened the scoring.

The Mustangs did have their lone response of the evening to end the first and start the second, as they grabbed their only lead of the hockey game, but following that it was all Flin Flon, as they added four in a row, including two in the final two minutes of the third to seal the win.

“In the D zone, especially in front of the net, you have to box guys out and put them on the ground, but we didn’t do that tonight,” Scherger added. “It comes down to want, you gotta want it more than them, every single shift you gotta want it more than them and you got to win your shift.”

Game 6 will go on Tuesday from the Northern Lights Palace, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Regardless of the outcome, the contest will mark the final home game of the year for the Stangs, until a new season begins, later this fall.
