A memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the First Nations Power Authority of Saskatchewan and SaskEnergy is inked.

The MOU intends to explore new energy sources for Indigenous communities and increase participation through cleaner energy initiatives, according to a media release from SaskEnergy.

“Working with the First Nations Power Authority, SaskEnergy will expand their already successful Indigenous procurement policies and practices and explore options to bring natural gas to more First Nations communities,” Minister Responsible for SaskEnergy Dustin Duncan, said.

“By signing this agreement, SaskEnergy is continuing to make progress addressing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #92.”

The First Nations Power Authority is assessing the energy needs of local First Nations through a series of audits.

“Our Community Energy Plans provide a roadmap for Indigenous people to figure out the best path to have access to clean energy,” Guy Lonechild, the CEO of First Nation Power Authority said.”Through collaboration with SaskEnergy and the implementation of energy audits, we’re not just energizing communities, but empowering Indigenous-led initiatives towards a cleaner, more secure energy future.”

The MOU will also identify Indigenous-owned businesses with expertise in decarbonization, a component of the corporation’s pledge to reduce emissions by 35 per cent by 2030.
