Kelvington-Wadena MLA Hugh Nerlien not running in fall election

The Saskatchewan Party MLA for Kelvington-Wadena will not run in this fall’s provincial election.

Hugh Nerlien, the Kelvington-Wadena MLA since 2016, announced via a SaskParty news release that he has decided against running in the Oct. 28 election.

“After many long discussions, I have decided not to seek re-election this fall and will be focusing on spending more time with family,” Nerlien said in the release. “It has been the honour of a lifetime to represent the great people of Kelvington-Wadena for the past eight years, and I look forward to supporting our next candidate to become the next MLA in a Saskatchewan Party government.”

The announcement comes just nine months after he was acclaimed as the SaskParty candidate in the Kelvington-Wadena constituency.

“It’s an honour to be acclaimed by Saskatchewan Party members in our constituency,” Nerlien said in August. “Representing Kelvington-Wadena since 2016 has been a true privilege and I look forward to the opportunity to continue to be your voice in the legislative assembly.”

Nerlien has served as Deputy Caucus Chair, Legislative Secretary to the Minister responsible for SaskTel, and the Minister responsible for Public Sector Bargaining during his time as MLA.

The Saskatchewan Party also announced in the same news release that Saskatoon Riversdale MLA Marv Friesen will not seek re-election due to health challenges.

The party said in the release they will nominate new candidates in the two ridings in the coming weeks.

Nerlien isn’t the only local MLA who won’t seek re-election as Carrot River Valley MLA Fred Bradshaw announced his retirement last September, and Tisdale’s Terri Bromm was chosen to replace him as the constituency’s SaskParty nominee.
