Mustangs back to it against Sioux Lookout

The Melfort Mustangs are returning to the ice after a two-day break in between their games at the Centennial Cup.

Melfort will once again have the early game, as they’re set to battle the Sioux Lookout Bombers.

The Mustangs are coming off a full off-day on Sunday, where they hit the Hockey Hall of Fame and caught a Blue Jays game in downtown Toronto.

They also had a 3-on-3 competition to keep the feels light and the legs moving in between their round-robin matches.

“It [3-on-3 tourney] was a lot of fun. The boys battled hard and it was a nice fun day before that because of the Hall of Fame and Jays game, so it was great to have a fun practice after all of that,” said defenceman Nolan Henderson.

“Our team clicked in the playoffs, (Trevor) Blevins was a great ref giving us some calls in our favour, so that helped us get the victory,” he joked.

The Stangs are now a bit more serious as they begin Tuesday against Sioux Lookout who are 0 and 3 in the event, so far.

While the Bombers have already been eliminated from playoff contention, Henderson knows they have played a lot of close games and are still a good hockey team.

“We gotta focus on picking up in the D-zone. I think in a big rink that’s really important, and we need to cut down their time and space. We just want to clean up the details, that’s our goal,” Henderson added.

“Every team wants to come here and show what they got, so their guys are going to be looking to get a win on the board. We’re gonna try and stop that because no matter who you play, you have to be ready to go.”

Puck drop is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saskatchewan time, as the Blue and Green look to improve to 3 and 0 and retake the top spot in Group B, coming off their win against the Winkler Flyers on Saturday.

“It would obviously be huge to keep winning and earn a bye to the semis. In a short tournament like this, rest is a weapon, so if we can win our next two and get straight there, it would help us keep rolling for sure,” Henderson said.

Opening faceoff will be shortly after 10 a.m. Saskatchewan time. You can catch all the action on 105 CJVR radio, with the Suncrest College pregame show starting at 9:45 a.m.
