Mustangs pull off another comeback victory to clinch playoff spot

The Melfort Mustangs aren’t exactly winning easy at the Centennial Cup right now but they sure are making it exciting as they had to pull off another come-from-behind victory early Tuesday.

In the club’s third game of round-robin play they trailed 2-0 to the Sioux Lookout Bombers after one period of play before scoring five of the next six markers to stay perfect and pick up a 5 – 3 victory.

Ryan Duguay scored the eventual game-winner off a beautiful stretch-feed from the captain Leith Olafson. It was his second of the night and put the Mustangs up 4-3 at the time, which gave them their first lead of the night. They never looked back.

“Coming into this tournament it’s hard. Every team is a champion, so going 3 and 0 so far is good, but we still have a lot of stuff to work on,” explained assistant coach, Tye Scherger.

“I’d say the biggest thing we have to do is stick together and play as a team. At times the guys were starting to play by themselves a little bit and that’s not how you win. You have to play together and go to war together, that’s that.”

The contest marked the second in a row where the Mustangs found themselves trailing by multiple goals early but rallied to win in the end.

The team has proven all year that they’re never out of a game, even if they fall behind on the scoreboard.

“Through our whole season to now, when we get down, we battle back and we battle hard because we got that heart and we want it more than anyone else,” Scherger added.

“Our last game before playoffs is against the host, so they’ll have good energy as they’re pushing for a playoff spot as well. They’re going to be ready and on their toes, so we have to come out heavy and play with lots of speed.”

With Melfort having now clinched a playoff spot, all that’s left up for grabs is the top spot in Group B, which would give a team a bye, straight to the semi-finals on Saturday.

The only way that can happen for Melfort on Tuesday is if the Miramichi Timberwolves beat the Winkler Flyers in overtime or a shootout tonight, as they hold the tiebreaker over both clubs.

Otherwise, the blue and green must earn at least a point against the host Oakville Blades Wednesday night.

“That’s what’s on our mind right now, we want to earn a bye straight to Saturday because we want that extra day off to then get ready for the semis,” concluded Scherger.

“As for now, we’ll just key in on things during our video sessions to prepare for tomorrow. Honestly, our needed improvements just come down to work ethic and attitude.”

The game will commence just after 5:30 p.m. Saskatchewan time, with the Suncrest College pregame show going at 5:15 p.m. on 105 CJVR.
