Avatex, City of Melfort extend agreement through 2029

The City of Melfort and the company that developed the StoneGate shopping centre have extended their land purchase agreement to November 2029.

The motion was recently passed by Melfort’s city council. City manager Adam Homes told northeastNOW they have been working with Avatex regarding the StoneGate development site since 2008.

“There (are) about 12 acres there to develop, so the site is about 60 per cent complete,” Homes explained.

Avatex is still looking to further develop the property, listing on their website the opportunity for a large ‘box anchor, freestanding restaurants, fast food outlets, a bank, gas bar, and 15-20 other retailers that would help complete their goal to fully develop within five to seven years. The Avatex Group of Companies has also listed an area of the site with the potential to house another hotel, while Homes said an apartment-style complex could also be a future possibility.

Homes said StoneGate has meant a lot to the growth of Melfort as a city, with many people from around the northeast coming to shop at Canadian Tire, Melfort Liquor Loft, and Backstage, while restaurants like Boston Pizza, Tim Hortons, and McDonalds and the Canalta Hotel have been very busy as well. While the new Prairie North Co-op Food Store is just east of StoneGate itself, Homes said they have attracted both local and non-local patrons.

According to Homes, Avatex has been a great partner with StoneGate and a couple of other projects.

“The Wellness Centre is another big project that we did with them,” said Homes.

Avatex also worked with the city to rehabilitate the Historic Post Office.
