City of Melfort looking to fill potholes after cool, wet spell

The varied spring weather hasn’t had much of an effect on the City of Melfort’s roads, according to the Director of Public Works.

“We haven’t seen more pothole activity than other years,” Lydia Steffen told northeastNOW.

City crews have been out trying to fill the holes that are on the road, but weather has played a factor in their repair schedule.

“The type of weather we have recently encountered has delayed remediation,” said Steffen. She added repairs are done both by city crews and contractors, based on the size of the potholes.

“Warm, dry weather is ideal for pothole repair,” explained Steffen. “Cooler temperatures and precipitation are what delays our repair process.”

Despite the delays in pothole repair due to the cooler, wet weather, Steffen said they haven’t received more complaints this year than others.

“Our city crew systematically works through the city to address repairs and prioritize any safety concerns,” explained Steffen. Anyone can report a pothole by calling the city at 306-752-5911.

Steffen said residents will notice an increase in pothole-repair activity over the next few weeks, as city crews and contractors will be busy fixing the roads.

“We are also very excited about our remediation project on the portion of Saskatchewan Drive, south of the railway tracks,” Steffen said. That project will see the resurfacing of a portion of Saskatchewan Drive South from the railway tracks to the service roads. The section south of that to the intersection of Highways 3 and 41 will take place in two or three years.
