The mayor of Melfort has decided he wants another shot at staying in the role.

Glenn George told northeastNOW after Monday night’s council meeting that he will run for mayor in November’s municipal election.

“This has been a really good council to work with, we’ve made a lot of progress, there’s a lot of stuff still in the works and I would like to see it through,” George explained. “I like the job and I’m having fun.”

According to George the current council is very diverse in their strengths, and he believes their experience together has helped define those strengths and take advantage of them. He added council has Melfort’s best interests in mind, and he hopes to work with at least some of them again should he be re-elected.

George said he is excited to see the progress on several local developments, including the new UFA card lock construction on Highway 41, and the upcoming Redhead Equipment construction around that same area. He added there are other developments and projects around the city that he can’t discuss but he is excited about.

The need for housing in Melfort is not going away, said George, and they are trying to entice more developers to build in the city. George said council has also faced challenges with COVID-19 and inflation, but that’s just part of the job and they’re all committed to doing their best for the city.

George grew up in Melfort, and after moving away for a while returned to the city over four decades ago. He has been on council for four terms, including the last four years as mayor.

George is the first person to launch their campaign for mayor in Melfort.

The municipal election will be held Nov. 13.
