Woytiuk goes first overall to North Stars, PA’s Borthwick taken number one by Ice Wolves in 2009 portion

The 2024 SJHL Draft is now in the books as eight full rounds of 2008 and 2009-born Saskatchewan hockey players have been chosen to become a part of a Junior A organization.

The draft, which began on 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, started with two rounds of 2009-born selections, with the La Ronge Ice Wolves selecting Prince Albert native, Declan Borthwick.

A forward for the Prince Albert Pirates in the U15 AA ranks this past season, Borthwick put up 57 points in just 28 games.

La Ronge also had the second overall pick, taking Humboldt Broncos U15 AA defenceman, Marek McIvor. In a combined 29 contests with the Broncos, McIvor had 38 points.

The Nipawin Hawks made their first pick of the day at spot number four, grabbing forward Carson Park.

A local product to the Battlefords area, Hudson Sayers, was then taken fifth by the Kindersley Klippers. Sayers is from Edam.

Melfort followed up that up with the sixth pick, selecting local product Tristan Hanson to become the newest Mustang.

The Kinistino native registered 58 points in 29 games with the U15 AA North East Wolfpack this year.

Hanson, a forward, also got called up to the Tisdale Trojans for two games.

At the ninth overall spot, it was the Battlefords North Stars who selected forward, Millar Anderson.

Next up, it was the Humboldt Broncos who picked up Prince Albert native, Tatum Fouquette.

Like Borthwick, he was a member of the Pirates this season, where he collected 42 points in 27 games as a defenceman.

Rounding out the first round of the 2009-born draft was another Pirate in Prince Albert product, Staiden Parenteau.

The newest member of the Flin Flon Bombers put up 30 points in 28 games as a D-man in the U15 AA ranks this season.

Other picks in the 2009 portion of the draft included: Prince Albert native and Mintos forward Jacob Tait (13th overall to the Humboldt Broncos), Jake Evans (21st overall to the Humboldt Broncos), and Nash Coquet (23rd overall to the Melfort Mustangs).

Next up, it was six rounds of players born in 2008, who would be selected to join an SJHL organization.

Easton Woytiuk went with the first overall selection to the Battlefords North Stars.

Following up was Waylon Gardipy who was chosen second by the La Ronge Ice Wolves. The Duck Lake native suited up with the Battlefords Stars U18 AAA squad this past season, registering 28 points in 44 games.

Moving down to the ninth selection, it was Charlie Kay taken off the board by the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

Next up was Reid Wasserman to the Humboldt Broncos.

Concluding the first round at the 12th spot was Prince Albert product Carter Wingert, who will be joining the Melville Millionaires. Wingert spent the last season with the Prairie Hockey Academy.

In the following five rounds, local products to the Battlefords, Prince Albert, Meadow Lake, Humboldt, Melfort, and Nipawin areas included: Tisdale Trojans goalie Jackson Dunn (17th overall to the Kindersley Klippers), Tisdale Trojans forward Taren Erhardt (22nd overall to the Nipawin Hawks), Edam native and North West Stars forward Kobi Weber (25th overall to the Kindersley Klippers), Shellbrook native and Parkland Elks defenceman Lane Keyowski (27th overall to the Yorkton Terriers), Unity native Kaden Sperle (39th overall to the Yorkton Terriers), Meadow Lake native and Battlefords Stars forward Kash Alger-East (40th overall to the Weyburn Red Wings), Meadow Lake native James Norman (48th overall to the Flin Flon Bombers), Wilkie native and North West Stars defenceman Austin Sittler (52nd overall to the La Ronge Ice Wolves), Prince Albert native and Timberwolves defenceman Cohen Toporowski (53rd overall to the Kindersley Klippers), Humboldt native Wyatt Fleishhacker (58th overall to the Broncos), Unity native Jaden Blanchette (60th overall to the Flin Flon Bombers), and finally Tisdale Native and North East Wolfpack/Trojans call-up forward Carter Corbett (62nd overall to the Weyburn Red Wings).

Meanwhile, other selections for the Mustangs, Broncos, North Stars, and Ice Wolves included: Dane Mansuy (14th overall to La Ronge), Brendan Jones (19th overall to La Ronge), Troy Shewchuk (21st overall to Battlefords), Gavin Folden (23rd overall to Melfort), Theoran Watteyne (26th overall to La Ronge), Kieran Sobry (33rd overall to Battlefords), Dryden Deobald (34th overall to Humboldt), Ryder Wilm (35th overall to Melfort), Boston Melnyk (36th overall to La Ronge), Simon Preston (38th overall to Melfort), Owen Chapman (41st overall to Humboldt), Liam Barzeele (43rd overall to La Ronge), Bryden Larsen (45th overall to Battlefords), Addy Price (47th overall to Melfort), Carson Deichert (51st overall to Melfort), Kane Domres (57th overall to Battlefords), Jacob Penley (59th overall to Melfort), Blake Mercier (69th overall to Battlefords), and last but not least Xavier Doane (71st overall to Melfort).
