Community Rink Affordability Grant

Provincial grant very important to Tisdale Curling Club

Jun 20, 2024 | 6:00 AM

The Government of Saskatchewan has sent out grants to skating and curling ice surfaces across the province, with many communities included having been in the northeast.

One in particular is the Tisdale Curling Club which received a $10,000 grant.

And while that may not seem like much to some, for the club, it makes a huge difference.

“It’s very impactful for sure,” said the club’s manager and ice maker, Marc Anderson. “Interest in curling has been going down a bit and it’s kind of becoming a struggle to keep the club alive, so the grant will definitely help for next season. We want to do some new things this year and we’ll need some equipment for that, which the grants will help cover.”

The club plans to create a ‘glow curling’ night, and other mixed nights for its new season.

According to Anderson, the club usually loses about $10,000 every year, so it’s nice to not have to start behind this time around.

The club is also looking for a new scraper for the ice and a cooler for the lounge upstairs. Meanwhile, they have been busy with kitchen renovations the past couple of years which was the main financial focus.

If more people come back to curling though, that will offset financial burdens.

“Grants like this give us more options on things to attract new people,” Anderson added. “We’re gonna be starting junior programs now, so hopefully we can use that money towards growing the memberships a little bit too.”

Other northeast communities that benefitted from grants included:

  • Melfort $5,000
  • Humboldt $5,000
