Melfort Pride Walk

Melfort Youth Evolution holding Pride Walk on Sunday

Jun 22, 2024 | 8:00 AM

Melfort’s third annual Pride Walk is quickly approaching.

Melfort Youth Evolution will hold the walk Sunday, June 23.

Alec Kaminski, who started the walk three years ago, told northeastNOW the event has come a long way from the first year.

“It was, I think, only…five to ten people (in) the first year, and last year was about 50 to 75,” Kaminski said, adding the organizers were very surprised that the walk has gained this much interest and momentum.

She said the idea for the walk came about due to June being Pride Month, and it was something that Melfort didn’t have before.

“We wanted to take something into a smaller community, because you don’t see many communities doing this sort of thing,” Kaminski explained.

The walk will begin at the North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) Offices at 124 McKendry Ave. W, Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

Participants will then walk down Main St. to Saskatchewan Dr., ending up at Cindy’s Independent Grocer around 7:30 p.m.

Everyone is invited to take part.

This year also marks the 20th anniversary of same-sex marriage being legalized in Saskatchewan, becoming the seventh jurisdiction in Canada to do so.
