Zenon Park hosted a grand opening for their new fire hall on Tuesday, as the village celebrated the massive upgrades from their previous space.

The project originally began back in 2018 but just recently finished the last details of the building.

“I think we had a really good turnout today, the community has been behind us the whole time, so they’ve excited been excited for this day to happen as well. They came out to show their support, just as they have for this entire project,” explained Fire Chief Tyler Moyen.

“This is a great new building in town and I think it might help people feel safe that we’re running out of a much larger building where we’re able to be more organized and well prepared, as well as train out of, to serve the public working and living in the area.”

Zenon Park didn’t receive a single dollar of provincial or federal funding for the project.

Everything either came from local donors/businesses, along with a $50,000 cheque from the Humboldt Strong Charitable Foundation.

Zenon Park Fire Department was one of the agencies that assisted with response during the Humboldt Broncos’ bus crash back in 2018.

“They kind of kicked us off. We were blown away and we definitely did not expect it in any way, shape, or form. Once we had that money, we wanted to make sure that we spent it wisely and appropriately, and we believe that we’ve accomplished just that,” Moyen added.

“We just want to thank everybody, the support has been overwhelming and very appreciated. The work doesn’t stop though because we’re going to continue to train and better ourselves and our department so that when we do have a call we’re able and prepared and provide the best service that we can.”

The department currently has 16 volunteer firefighters and four active medical first responders.

Their coverage area includes their municipality, as well as portions of both the RM of Connaught and the RM of Arborfield.

They have a first command truck, a rescue van, grassfire trailers, rescue toboggans for ATVs and snowmobiles, and a recently acquired jaws of life.

“There’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes before responding to calls… training, along with maintenance on our equipment and all of our tools. This is a great place where we can be organized and prepared,” Moyen told northeastNOW.

“Our next goal is to take over the vehicle fire rescue in our area. Now that the firehouse is completed and our training for that is completed, we’re just working through the last bit of red tape.”

The land for the new fire hall was donated by the Association Fransaskoise de Zenon Park.

The fire hall has been operational since November of 2022, however, the finishing touches were just completed.
