Melfort’s Misskey selected by Sharks in 2024 NHL Draft

A northeast hockey player just had one of the most important moments of his career, yet somehow, it happened on the golf course.

Melfort’s own Nate Misskey found out he was selected 143rd overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 2024 NHL Draft, during a family golf trip in Banff.

“It was a great day, I was with my family just trying to take my mind off it by not watching the draft. It was definitely an awesome experience though when I got that call from my agent and my phone started blowing up. To share that with my family was awesome,” Misskey told northeastNOW.

“The Sharks are definitely going in a good direction, they have a lot of young guys that can really make an impact in the coming years, so I’m looking forward to seeing how it develops and I’m planning to be a part of it.”

One of those players that Misskey is hoping to join is of course the number one selection in the draft, Macklin Celebrini.

Misskey was able to spend a bit of time with players like Celebrini, along with all the other young draftees during a development camp in San Jose this week.

“It’s been a fun week up here getting to see the city and stuff like that, along with meeting some new guys, it’s been awesome,” he added. “It’s a little different here, definitely not flat like Saskatchewan and the weather is pretty hot. I’m definitely getting used to it and I love it up here.”

The 19-year-old defenceman has spent parts of the last three seasons with the Victoria Royals in the WHL, accumulating 122 games and 51 points.

Prior to that, he spent time with the Melfort Mustangs and Prince Albert Mintos.

“Looking back, I think you always hope to get to this point but it becomes more of a reality the further you go. It’s always been a goal of mine and the work isn’t done yet, I want to make the jump as early as possible and play at the highest level I can,” Misskey concluded.

“There’s a small group of NHL players who have come from Melfort, so to now be a part of that group is awesome. You work so hard for this and you look up to those guys and want to do the same thing. Coming from a small town, it’s always your dream to make it big and I think I’m on my way to doing that.”
