Local players in the hunt at Sask Amateur Championships

Jul 11, 2024 | 3:37 PM

The Saskatchewan Amateur Golf Championships are midway through their four-day tournament, as some local players are eyeing the top of the leaderboard down the stretch.

Currently, Kye Fisher from Edmonton Alta. is co-leading the overall Men’s Amateur at -5 through two full rounds of play. He is tied with Luke Cote from Regina, followed closely by Alex Swinnerton and Jehremy Ryde who are both at -4.

Prince Albert product, Danny Klughart is the closest local to the lead, sitting at even par, after shooting 3-under on Wednesday.

Other locals include Nipawin’s Cole Taylor who is tied for 20th, Battlefords’ Tim Acaster at T34, Prince Albert’s Cole Jenkins at T56, Colby Frederich from Battlefords at T97, Jordan Cullum from Prince Albert at T119, Hudson Bay’s Talon Smith at 129, and Nipawin’s Nicholas Kitchen at 130.

The Men’s Amateur will wrap on Friday after the conclusion of Round 4. It began on Tuesday at the Royal Regina Golf Club.

As for the Women’s Amateur, which is being played at the same club, Sela Ogada from Calgary, Alta. is tied for the co-lead with home club product, Alexandra Schmidt from Regina. They are tied at 10-over-par after two full rounds, entering the third and final round today (Thursday).

The women’s amateur champion will be crowned a day earlier than the men’s, as they only play 54 holes, versus the traditional 72.

This championship comes on the heels of last week’s Junior Championships in Yorkton.

Hometown favourite, Ella Kozak won the women’s side, while Saskatoon’s Ryan Mosher won the men’s side.

The top local finishers were Nipawin’s Cole Taylor (solo 7th) in the men’s back tees and Humboldt’s Tylan Wallin (tied for 4th) in the men’s forward tees.
