New Zealand uses long ball to hand Canada second straight loss at World Cup Qualifiers

New Zealand was catching flight on day three of the Men’s World Cup Group B Qualifiers in Prince Albert on Friday.

The Black Sox National Team matched up with Canada to wrap up the third day of competition at Rotary Field where they managed a trio of home runs to defeat the hosts, 5-1.

N.Z. managed the first run of the game in the top of the second, when Tyron Bartorillo launched a solo shot to left-center field to make it 1-0. After Te Wera Bishop smacked a solo home run of his own in the fifth, New Zealand added two more an inning later with a two-run shot from Cole Evans.

Following a Hohepa Monk pinch-hit lead off single in the top of the seventh, Benjamin Enoka ripped a double to center that scored Monk from first.

Now down 5-0 and down to their last three outs, Canada managed to spring some life with Scott Nehaj hitting a lead off single. Nehaj was quickly subbed for pinch runner Mason McKay and it proved beneficial as a batter later, Justin Laskowski poked a double to left that scored McKay from first for Canada’s first run of the game.

Canada now plays Israel in their fifth and final round robin match at 7:00 p.m. Meanwhile, New Zealand will play in a doubleheader on day four, matching up with Argentina at 1:00 p.m. and with Hong Kong, China at 4:00 p.m.

Singapore combines for 25 runs in day three doubleheader

Singapore needed only a combined nine innings to complete their doubleheader on day three as they mashed their way to back-to-back mercy wins.

In game one, Singapore made quick work of Israel by winning the game in just four innings, managing four runs in the first, five runs in the second, three in the third, and another four in the fourth for 16 total runs on 18 hits. The lead quickly became insurmountable for the Israelis as the could rally just one run, which was scored by Liam Zepelvitch off a Shani Hadar double in the bottom of the third.

Game two was much of the same as Singapore knocked off Hong Kong, China in five innings. The contest ended in a 9-1 decision which was highlighted by three two-run home runs by Ean Eu, Schuyler Seah, and Joshua Tam, along with a two-run triple by Malcom Lim. The lone Hong Kong tally was courtesy of Wai Leong Wong who scored Tak Hei Cheung from second with a single in the bottom of the fourth.

Singapore wraps up the round robin on Saturday against Argentina at 10:00 a.m.

Ortellado hits three home runs to help Argentina past Hong Kong in three innings

The only other game to be played Friday was the quickest of the slate, which saw Argentina down Hong Kong, China in just three innings.

The Argentinians downed Hong Kong 16-0, which was highlighted by an offensive explosion by Franco Ortellado.

Starting in his first ever World Cup contest, the 28-year-old infielder hit a two-run homer in the first, a solo shot in the second, and a three-run blast in the third for six total RBI’s.

The last time a player hit three home runs in single game was back in 2017, when Yeider Chirinos accomplished the feat during Venezuela’s 35-0 win over Turkey at the Men’s Softball World Championship in Whitehorse, Yukon.

Like New Zealand, Argentina also remains undefeated in the tournament sitting at 3-0.
