Northern winners at Senior Golf Provincials in Nipawin

The 2024 Saskatchewan Senior Golf Provincials wrapped up at the Evergreen Golf Course in Nipawin Thursday evening, as three players went home with significant hardware.

The three-day, 54-hole tournament produced multiple National quota spots, along with a Senior Men’s, Senior Women’s, and Men’s Mid-Masters champion.

First off the course were the women, as Prince Albert’s own, Pauline McDougall won by four strokes with a three-day total of 242 (29 over par).

She became just the second woman of all time and first since 1974 (Daisy Junor) to bring the Senior Title back to PA and her home course of Cooke Municipal Golf Course.

“I didn’t realize that until just now, so I’m just happy to be able to represent Cooke in this way,” McDougall told northeastNOW. “When I hear my name as the provincial champ, it sounds really good and I like it a lot.”

McDougall has confirmed she will be going to the National Championship, which will run August 26-29 at The Club at North Halton in Georgetown, Ontario.

She finished third in last year’s provincial senior championship, which also earned her a trip to nationals this past season.

Currently, McDougall has put very few expectations on herself, as she just hopes to make the cut again.

Next off the track were the senior men’s, as Saskatchewan legend Colin Coben walked away with the trophy. He won by just a single stroke, with a three-day total of 226 (10 over par).

According to the now four-time senior champion, this will be his 24th Canadian Team, while he’s already been to nationals 32 times.

At 69 years old, he still believes he’s got plenty of game and is excited about another crack on the biggest stage.

The Senior Men’s National tournament will run September 12-15 at the Saugeen Golf Club in Port Elgin, Ontario.

Last but not least, it was the Men’s Mid-Masters who were the final golfers off the links, as a three-hole playoff was needed to decide a champion.

It came down to Kris Carley and Todd Turgeon, who after 54 holes were tied at six-over-par (222).

Ultimately, it was Turgeon who would defend his title, as the Spiritwood native walked away with back-to-back championships.

“The second one is definitely harder,” he said. “I think I felt a bit of pressure there down the stretch because you just want to win so bad again.”

Turgeon was able to go to nationals last year, but unfortunately won’t be able to do so again this year as he has to work.

Although he’s a bit disappointed about that fact, he’s still proud of his performance and is excited about his win.

The Men’s Mid-Amateur National Championship will be held at the Carleton Golf & Yacht Club from August 20-23 in Manotick, Ontario.

Each golfer throughout the senior championships in Nipawin stated multiple times about the great hospitality and course conditions that the Evergreen provided.

The Evergreen agreed with those notions, as they thanked all for coming out to what they said was a wonderful week.
