Fire crews in Nipawin respond to carbon monoxide call

Another close carbon monoxide (CO) call in the northeast.

Nipawin fire crews were called to a home Monday night after a CO alarm sounded just as residents were going to bed.

The residents vacated the house and dialed 9-1-1.

Firefighters took a CO monitor into the house and discovered levels in the 50 parts per million (ppm) range, and up to 165 ppm in the furnace room.

SaskEnergy arrived and found the hot water heater was the culprit, and the gas was shut off until a plumber could repair the issue.

The site was ventilated until levels dropped back down to zero.

The Nipawin Fire Department said those rates had the potential to make people sick and would be very dangerous with prolonged exposure.
