Information available for Melfort residents who want to run for council

While the civic election is still a few months away, municipalities across the region are preparing for the vote.

The City of Melfort has a dedicated section of its website for information on the election and how people can put their name forward as a candidate.

City Clerk Marley Seymour told northeastNOW people that are passionate about the community and interested in making a difference should consider making their name stand.

“It really gives them a voice and allows people to really get involved in the community,” said Seymour.

She said the resources available on the city’s website will help provide information to people interested in running for election. Resources include a video that explains how the municipal office and the election work.

“There’s also an information guide for candidates that is available on our website,” Seymour explained. Requirements and notifications are also noted.

Interest in municipal elections tends to fall behind their counterparts in provincial and federal politics. The 2020 election in Melfort saw a voter turnout of just 28 per cent. However, the argument can be made that civic politics have more of an impact on your daily life, including taxation and infrastructure. Seymour agreed.

“It’s right on your back door here, it’s our community, right? So we have to get involved if we want to make change.”

Nomination papers will be online in Melfort Sept. 3. Candidates can take time to fill out the nomination package. Nomination day is Oct. 9, with a withdrawal deadline of Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. Residents can run for mayor or one of six councillor positions.
