Melfort downtown sidewalk repairs complete; Sask Dr. paving project upcoming

The city of Melfort has had one capital project completed, and another is set to begin in the coming weeks.

Sidewalk repairs on three blocks of Main St. have wrapped up, and Director of Works and Utilities Lydia Steffen said there is more work to be done in the city.

“The sidewalk repairs included in the 2024 Capital Projects have been completed, and we are now scheduling our deficiency walkthroughs before entering the warranty period,” Steffen told northeastNOW. “The city has some outstanding repairs and replacements that fall under our annual operational budget.”

Steffen said construction work in the downtown core can be a challenge due to the higher volume of traffic; however, she added that people respected the construction zones and paid attention to the city’s communications and local signage.

Another significant project that will take place in Melfort is the Saskatchewan Drive paving project. Crews will be paving the stretch of that road from the railroad tracks to the service roads, and work is scheduled to start in mid-August, depending on weather and the contractor’s schedule.

“This section of Saskatchewan Drive is in evident need of repair,” said Steffen. “With support from the Urban Highway Connector Program, we have secured grant funding from the Ministry of Highways to advance this project.”

The rehabilitation of the rough remaining section of that road to the intersection of Highways 3, 6, and 41 is also planned, Steffen said it is part of the Capital Projects managed by the Ministry of Highways.

“We have received acknowledgment of our application from the Ministry, which has confirmed that this section of the highway will be addressed within their budgeting and construction timelines.”
