Man charged after recycling bin fire in Melfort; house hit by vehicle on James Smith Cree Nation

Charges have been laid after last week’s fire near the Melfort provincial courthouse.

Melfort RCMP were called Aug. 14 about a man who broke two windows at two separate businesses, and lit the recycling dumpster on fire next to the Norman Vickar building on Crawford Avenue.

A 19-year-old man faces two charges of mischief under $5,000 and one count of arson.

Police were also called about a vehicle striking a house on the James Smith Cree Nation.

The incident happened on Sunday, Aug. 18, when a man hit a house with a vehicle and broke a window.

A 48-year-old man is charged with impaired driving, refusing to provide a breath sample, dangerous driving, driving while prohibited, and obstructing police.

There were no injuries.
