Local golf contingent to compete nationally this fall

A contingent of Saskatchewan golfers will have the opportunity to win a Canadian national Championship this October.

The team includes PGA of Canada Professional Darcy Myers of Prince Albert’s Cook Municipal Golf Course, along with Justin Heather and Ian Blocha of Biggar, and Scott Ulven and David Howell of Saskatoon.

They punched their ticket to the RBC PGA Scramble National at Cabot Links Golf Course in Nova Scotia after winning the Saskatchewan Regional Finals last week at the Willows Golf Course just south of Saskatoon.

Ulvan hit an improbable hole in one on the eighth hole to help the team win the tournament, finishing ahead of 17 other teams from across the province.

“146 yards, pitching wedge, dead straight the whole way…told it to go while in the air and then it one hopped and dropped,” said Ulven. “The first feeling was disbelief. We weren’t 100 per cent sure that it went in but Darcy used his rangefinder and couldn’t see it, then our scorer drove up to check and sure enough it dropped. I think Ian was happier for me than I was. For myself it was a bit surreal, as I actually got my first hole-in-one earlier this year on a golf trip to Utah. Justin and Dave were on this trip as well so now they are on payroll to play golf with me every round.”

The group will compete against teams from all over the country at the October final. Now in its ninth year, the RBC PGA Scramble is the largest grassroots amateur golf program in Canada.

Canadian Men’s Mid Amateur Championships

The Canadian Men’s Mid Amateur Championships are underway at Carleton Golf and Yacht Club in Manotick, Ont.

Prince Albert’s Danny Klughart and North Battleford’s Tim Acaster are two of eight Saskatchewan golfers in the mix.

Heading into the third day of play Wednesday, Klughart was tied for 26^th place and +2. Acaster was tied for 67^th and +5.
