Co-op cyber attack still under investigation

The investigation into the cyber attack that hit Federated Co-operatives Limited back in June is wrapping up.

It’s been two months since the incident that led to empty grocery shelves and left Co-op Cardlocks closed across the country.

“Our investigation is nearing completion,” Brad DeLorey, director of communications and public affairs for the Co-op Refinery Complex, said in an email.

“At that time, we will be able to conduct interviews.”

DeLorey said he hopes the investigation will conclude by mid-September.

Although grocery systems and cardlocks are back up and running like normal, there are still plenty of unanswered questions.

Colin Rooke, with Butler Byers Insurance, suggested the attack on Federated Co-operatives Ltd. was likely ransomware.

“The fact that they have been down for so long, it appears they are locked out, and that would be something typical of ransomware,” he said during an appearance on The Evan Bray Show.

The company has not yet confirmed if any data was compromised during the incident.
