The general manager of McDonald’s restaurant in Melfort has won a prestigious award.

Harmanpreet Kaur was recognized by McDonald’s Canada as one of the top five per cent of managers across the country and was awarded a 2024 Outstanding Manager of the Year award.

Kaur first joined McDonald’s five years ago and was quickly promoted to general manager. She told northeastNOW she was excited to receive the news of her award.

“I was totally shocked at that moment,” Kaur said. “I had no words to say at that time, totally blank.”

Kaur said it took her a while to process the news.

“That’s a proud moment for me when I (came) to know that I got awarded for the outstanding manager of the year.”

Kaur told northeastNOW she’s an extroverted person and that helps her in her role, and she also credits the team around her for the success of the restaurant.

“Every single staff (member), whenever I need their help, they are helping me and I am leading the restaurant (to) a very good result,” said Kaur.

A strong team helps any general manager, Kaur explained, and her team in the northeast has helped.

“Without a team, we are nothing,” she said.

Harmanpreet has also used her skills as a general manager to help in other local McDonald’s locations. The Humboldt location was without a general manager for a period, and she lent her expertise to help stabilize the situation. She also helped to oversee the Nipawin franchise when it first opened. Kaur said it was a good opportunity for her to help develop and train managers and staff in those locations.

Melfort franchisee Raj Bains praised Kaur for her abilities and mentorship.

“(Harmanpreet) wholeheartedly prioritizes the training and focus of her team at the Melfort restaurant,” Raj Bains, Melfort McDonald’s Franchisee, said in a news release. “She and her team are empowered to guarantee that every guest receives the utmost standard of food quality and an outstanding experience.”

Kaur said seeing the Nipawin and Melfort stores having friendly competitions among each other makes her feel proud.

According to the news release, “McDonald’s franchisees and regional management nominate restaurant managers across the country for the Outstanding Manager of the Year award to recognize their hard work, dedication and commitment to McDonald’s Canada and its customers.”
