Wassermann struggles in opening Para-Rowing heat

Day 2 of the 2024 Paralympic Games was on Friday as a handful of more sports got underway.

One of those events was Para-Rowing, as the PR1 Men’s Single Sculls had their first heat.

Competing in the sport was Team Canada, who was represented by Saskatoon native, Jacob Wassermann.

Unfortunately, the former Humboldt Bronco struggled in his Paralympic debut, finishing in last place in his six-person heat.

Wassermann had a time of 11 minutes and 22 seconds in the 2000-metre row, which was over a full minute longer than first place.

Ukraine topped the leaderboard in Heat 1 (of which Wassermann was a part of) with a time of nine minutes and four seconds.

As for Heat 2, Great Britain had the best time (eight minutes and five seconds), while Tunisia had the worst at 10 minutes and seven seconds.

Both Ukraine’s and Great Britain’s rowers have qualified for the A Finals on Sunday, while Wassermann and Tunisia, along with Israel, Australia, Spain, Japan, Italy, France, and Germany, will have to compete in the Repechages on Saturday, and possibly the B Finals even earlier on Sunday.

This is Wassermann’s Paralympic debut, following his silver medal at a continental regatta in Rio de Janeiro in March, and his national rowing title in Canada last year.

The hope is that he will use that experience to his advantage and cash in a much better time in the next couple of days.
