Resurfacing underway on major stretch of road in Melfort

The much-anticipated resurfacing work on Saskatchewan Drive South is now underway.

The work is part of the Urban Highway Connector Program (UHCP).

Lydia Steffen was the Director of Public Works with the City of Melfort when the upgrade was announced.

She told northeastNOW the taxiway paving project at the Melfort Airport, as part of the Community Airport Partnership (CAP) Program, preceded work on Saskatchewan Drive.

Steffen said the Saskatchewan Drive resurfacing is important for residents.

“Rehabilitation of any road is significant to improving our city’s infrastructure,” said Steffen. “The Ministry (of Highways) recognizes the importance of Highway 6/Saskatchewan Drive, and we are appreciative of their funding support to help facilitate the project.”

The resurfacing project on Saskatchewan Drive South, from the railroad tracks south to the service roads, will stretch into October. Steffen said construction will be happening in different phases and should take 3-4 weeks, weather dependent.

The city said on social media that access to different intersections and adjacent parking lots will be affected during construction, and at least one access and exit point to the StoneGate Shopping Centre will be maintained.

Another project in the works with UHCP funding is the resurfacing of the rest of Saskatchewan Drive South to the corner of Highways 3, 6, and 41. Steffen said the future capital project for the Ministry of Highways is planned, and the city will be notified when it is ready for execution.
