Preseason Finale

Mustangs end preseason on high note, showing intensity of regular-season-ready club

The Melfort Mustangs capped off their 2024/25 preseason with a big win over the Humboldt Broncos.

Melfort responded Saturday night at home with a 5-1 victory, after falling 6-0 in Humboldt on Friday.

The difference between the two contests was the amount of returning players the Mustangs had in their lineup, as their regulars had a lot to say on the ice Saturday night.

“It was great to get back to Mustang hockey. It was a huge win, especially against a team like that, we don’t like them coming in here,” said Stangs’ veteran d-man, Nolan Roberts.

“We don’t have two nights in a row where we play like we did on Friday. We came in and responded and that’s our identity here. We’re going to follow up like that all regular season, doesn’t matter what game it is, we’re coming to play like that to respond.”

Melfort still had a handful of new and young players in the lineup Saturday, as the team got some fresh faces acclimated to the group.

Roberts believes that his team has plenty of returning players to lead the ship, with the additions ready to contribute.

“We got a lot of guys coming back, so obviously there weren’t a ton of spots up for grabs this year. Guys have done a great job competing, battling, and pushing for spots, and that has also made our returnees come back and be forced to do their best,” he told northeastNOW.

“I think we showed that we’re ready for the regular season because everybody has been coming in and making everybody work for everything they got.”

The Blue and Green’s regular season begins Friday, in La Ronge, against the Ice Wolves.
