Mustangs win finals rematch, home opener against Bombers

Sep 22, 2024 | 4:33 PM

The Melfort Mustangs had quite the night on Saturday, as their home opener against the Flin Flon Bombers started with a pregame ceremony where the club raised their championship banner into the rafters.

Prior to the finals rematch, last year’s players and staff also received their championship rings.

Forward and newly minted assisted captain, Logan Belton, along with Melfort’s newest captain, Ty Thornton, were the two Mustangs players to raise the banner at the Palace.

“It was a surreal moment, we’ve been looking forward to this all summer, getting our rings, seeing that banner get raised up into the rafters, the boys couldn’t be happier. We’re super excited to get the season going and maybe win again,” Belton told northeastNOW.

“Last year we wouldn’t have won without our fans, our fans are our heart and blood, so it was awesome to see all the people that came out and cheered us on for our home opener.”

The game against Flin Flon was the first time the two clubs saw each other since Game 6 of last year’s finals, which Melfort won at home.

It was also the first game the Mustangs played at the Palace since then.

“It’s always fun to play Flin Flon, we have a little beef between us, and we get to play them seven more times this year, so we’re super excited to keep her going,” Belton added.

“It also feels awesome to get to 2 and 0 to start the year, but we’re gonna put that behind us and just keep working on getting better, and then next week we’re gonna go get four more points.”

Belton had a pair of goals on the night, which was a 6-2 victory, as he’s now up to three goals on the season through just two games.

Another guy who scored against the Bombers was rookie Jake Giacobbo, as he netted his first career SJHL goal.

“I’m playing with some great players, and I’m just putting my head down and working hard, and good things are happening,” Belton said on his good start to the season.

“As for Giacobbo, it’s always great to see young guys get their first goals. It gets the little monkey off their back so they can continue on and keep going. It was awesome to see him get his first.”

The Stangs will be on the road next weekend, for a southern swing to Estevan and Weyburn.

It will be the Blue and Green’s first trip to face the Bruins since they knocked them out in five games in Round 1 of last year’s postseason.
