Late collapse sinks Hawks against Klippers

The Nipawin Hawks controlled 58 minutes of Friday’s showdown with Kindersley Klippers, but a late collapse resulted in a 4-2 loss.

As the second week of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) regular season opened, the Hawks hosted the Klippers for the first time.

The home team jumped out to a 1-0 lead courtesy of Spencer Chestolowski’s first SJHL goal in the first period. Nipawin added another in the second period when Mason Karakochuk wristed his first of the season past Brett O’Halloran.

Kindersley cut the lead in half late in the middle stanza.

With a one-goal lead late in the final period, Nipawin took a penalty and Kindersley capitalized tying the game 2-2. The Klippers were awarded their second penalty shot of the game just six seconds later, this time Cam Perlinger beat Tyson Endall giving Kindersley the lead and the win.

“I thought we had a really good first period, I thought we came out flying,” Head Coach and General Manager Tad Kozun said after the game. “I thought we took our foot off the gas and it cost us.”

The Hawks had a chance to close the game early. Nipawin had five powerplays in the first period, and nine overall, but didn’t score on any of the opportunities including an extended two-man advantage in the opening frame.

Kozun pointed to special teams as a determining factor in the tough result.

“Going oh-for-nine on the powerplay, that can’t happen. We have to work on that obviously to make sure we can put the game away.” He continued.

Kindersley scored once in three chances on the man advantage and on one of two penalty shots.

Endall made 28 saves in the loss, O’Halloran made 25 stops for the Klippers in the win.

The Hawks travel to North Battleford on Saturday to meet the Stars. Faceoff is 7:30 p.m.
