Point in Time counts taking place in Melfort, Nipawin today

Oct 1, 2024 | 10:01 AM

A pair of local organizations want to know more about the homeless situation in Melfort and Nipawin.

Marguerite Riel Centre staff and community volunteers will be conducting a Point in Time (PIT) count in Melfort Oct. 1.

The organization said homelessness in this case means “you are without a permanent and secure place to live, and that includes sleeping in shelters, on the streets, or living temporarily with others without having your own permanent housing (e.g. couch surfing).

People filling out the survey will receive gift cards, and volunteers will have items like sandwiches, gloves, socks, and hygiene items to give to those in need.

Volunteers will have identification and will be in parks, streets, and alleys.

Anyone who knows someone who is experiencing homelessness can drop by the Marguerite Riel Centre at 104 Burrows Ave. W. to fill out a survey.

A Point in Time count is also taking place today in Nipawin, as Nipawin Oasis gathers information.

The Oasis said on their social media account that the survey will give the community information on the demographics and needs of those affected by homelessness.

“This information can be used to target community resources to where they are most needed, to secure funding for housing and to advocate for more housing in our community,” the Oasis said.

The Nipawin Oasis is located at 504 Railway Ave. W.

A Point in Time count is also taking place in Prince Albert this month.
