Tisdale CAO looking forward to engaging with community

Oct 2, 2024 | 5:00 PM

The new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) in the town of Tisdale is excited to be a part of the community.

Lovely Magnaye comes to the community after previously serving as the deputy CAO in Wadena and Wynyard.

Magnaye told northeastNOW she wasn’t thinking of moving to Tisdale, but one of her colleagues urged her to apply for the CAO position after the departure of Brad Hvidston.

“For some reason when I checked the website…it says ‘Opportunity Grows Here’, so I talked to my husband and I said ‘maybe I should try,’” Magnaye said.

She said her husband moved to Tisdale when he first got to Canada from the Philippines, and so she was familiar with the community.

“So I said it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to try,” said Magnaye.

According to Magnaye, being a CAO is like being a community builder that helps provide the needs for the community. Magnaye said being the CAO is a challenging job, but having a wonderful staff makes the job much easier.

“It’s a big job, but with the support of your senior management staff and your town staff, you’ll be able to provide the services that your community needs,” she explained. Those needs include water services, transportation, recreation facilities, bylaw enforcement, and animal enforcement.

Magnaye said each day is different for a CAO as they can wear many hats at once, including ensuring the town’s finances are in order. She said CAO’s “lead up,” providing recommendations and guidance to council, “lead down,” by providing direction and support to staff, and “lead out,” by engaging residents.

Magnaye believes her experience as a deputy CAO, serving as a Chief Administrative Officer while the CAO was out of town, has helped her prepare for her new role.

“I got the experience without getting paid the big bucks,” Magnaye joked.

Tisdale has been welcoming to Magnaye and her family, and she looks forward to engaging the community as someone that was not born and raised in Tisdale.

“I’m looking forward to working with our residents.”

Magnaye said the local Filipino community has also been very welcoming to her family.
