Mustangs lose first of season at hands of Millionaires

The Melfort Mustangs are no longer undefeated, following a 3-1 loss at home Friday night to the Melville Millionaires.

Melfort dug themselves an early hole, falling behind 3-0 after the first period.

The Mustangs would fight back in the second with a goal of their own but failed to get any more, as Melville improved to 5 and 0 on the season.

“I think we had a couple of unlucky bounces, but they worked hard and they out-competed us, so those ones went in for them, and that’s the way it should have gone,” said Stangs’ captain Ty Thornton.

“After the first goal, I think we kind of got a little bit of momentum after that, and took it to them at the end of the second there. The third period was then all back and forth and as we finished out, we had our chances, we just got to figure out a way to bury them and go from there.”

After being handed their first loss of the season by the Mills, the Blue and Green will now have the opportunity to do the same to Melville on Saturday.

Melfort will travel to face the Millionaires, for the second night of a back-to-back, with puckdrop scheduled for 7 p.m.

“They know who to beat us now, so we need to out-compete them because they out-competed us last night. We just need to work harder and go into their barn, set the tone early, and not allow any goals against,” Thornton added.

“They came into our rink and handed us our first loss, so now it’s time for us to go into their rink and give them their first loss.”

Thornton scored his first goal of the season, as the Mustangs’ Captain, in the 3-1 defeat.
