Municipal election employees needed in Melfort, Nipawin

Oct 11, 2024 | 12:56 PM

Melfort and Nipawin are both looking for election employees for the upcoming municipal election.

Director of Corporate Services in Melfort Lydia Steffen told northeastNOW they are looking to fill several positions, including deputy returning officers and poll clerks, along with staff to manage the recreation and information tables.

Election workers cannot be a candidate in the municipal election. They do not need to be electors in the municipality and should be at least 18 years old because they will be signing documents including their election official oath and affirmation.

Steffen said it’s crucial to hire election officials.

“Election officials ensure that elections are conducted fairly, transparently, and in accordance with the law, helping to maintain public trust in the election system,” said Steffen.

She said officials also manage the staffing of polling stations, ensuring the proper voting equipment, and overseeing the voting process.

“Election officials provide support and information to voters, helping them understand the voting process, polling locations, and what to expect on election day.”

According to Steffen, the officials also ensure election laws and regulations are followed, and they’re trained to respond quickly to minimize any disruptions should equipment failures or emergencies arise.

“Overall, effective election officials are key to a functioning democracy, ensuring that elections run smoothly and that every eligible voter can participate,” Steffen explained.

All election officials will be provided training, with the primary training session in Melfort to be held Oct. 21. Melfort residents interested in becoming an election official can learn more here. They can also contact Steffen, who is the Returning Officer, at City Hall.

The Town of Nipawin is also seeking Election Officials.

Anyone interested can contact Legislative Services Officer Jen Murphy at (306) 862-9866 or by email at officer.legislativeservices@nipawin.com.

Additionally, those interested can find details on their website on the election page or on the job opportunities page.

The municipal elections will be held province-wide Nov. 13.
