Bombers exact revenge on Mustangs

The Melfort Mustangs travelled to Flin Flon Friday night for the first time since last season’s SJHL Finals.

Melfort scored the first goal of the game less than two minutes in, however, it was mostly downhill after that, as they fell by a score of 6-3.

“We started good, but after that, there was an all-around lack of effort. We didn’t have anyone in there that had a solid effort besides maybe (Kristian) Coombs, who we left out to dry a lot. Tomorrow is going to be a different story, that’s for sure,” said Mustangs’ assistant coach Tye Scherger.

The Stangs gave up four unanswered goals to the Bombers, after they broke the ice, giving up numerous breakaways and in tight chances, where Flin Flon players were all alone.

According to Scherger, that was due to the previously mentioned lack of effort, which can simply be cleaned up by hard work.

The hope is that the Blue and Green will be much more hard-working, when they welcome the Bombers to the Northern Lights Palace, for the second night of a back-to-back, home-and-home set.

“The biggest thing we have to do is just work. The one-on-one work and just winning your battles, going to the greasy areas, going in front of the net, and being tough in the D-zone. It’s just as simple as that, we have to play Mustang identity which is greasy and tough,” Scherger concluded.

Puck drop for the rematch between the Mustangs and Bombers is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Melfort on Saturday night.
