APAS outlines priorities for agriculture in Saskatchewan election campaign

The provincial election presents a unique opportunity to address the pressures and challenges in the agriculture sector.

The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) has created a list of its key concerns leading up to the vote on Oct. 28 election in Saskatchewan.

President Ian Boxall said APAS has selected three key areas which will position Saskatchewan agricultural producers, rural communities, and farm and ranch families for future success.

“Our province’s agricultural sector is a cornerstone of our economy, and it’s essential that we have policies in place to support its continued growth and prosperity,” Boxall said. “These priorities address critical issues facing producers, from program enhancements to infrastructure development.”

The association would like to see improvements to crop insurance coverage, financial support for young farmers, and the creation of a comprehensive cost-shared insurance option for livestock producers.

In the area of business competitiveness APAS wants revisions to Provincial Sales tax (PST) policies and modernization of the Agricultural Implements Act to address a producers’ right to repair.

APAS would also like to see financial support for farm gas and electrical upgrades.

Boxall said these policy priorities reflect the needs and concerns of Saskatchewan’s agricultural producers.

“By working together with the government, we can create a more sustainable and prosperous future for our sector,” he said.
