NDP candidate in Melfort constituency focusing on health care, education, affordability

The candidate for the New Democratic Party (NDP) in the Melfort constituency is looking to make a dent into the Sask. Party dominance in the riding.

Melanie Dyck is representing NDP orange in the 2024 provincial election.

The constituency has been represented by the Saskatchewan Party since its inception in 1997 and hasn’t been represented by the NDP since the 1991 provincial election.

Dyck is an income tax professional and has a master’s degree in English from the University of Saskatchewan. She was born and raised in Rosetown and currently lives in Saskatoon.

Dyck told northeastNOW she comes from a long line of NDP supporters, with her parents ardent followers of Tommy Douglas and huge supporters of public healthcare.

“I’ve been involved in almost every election campaign, provincial and federal, and have also helped out in the municipal level,” said Dyck.

The NDP candidate said she’s a believer in party leader Carla Beck, calling her “no-nonsense” and “Prairie practical.” Dyck said affordability is a significant issue in the province, and added it’s time for a change in government.

Affordability isn’t the only challenge faced by residents in the province, according to Dyck.

“Healthcare and education, those are the main ones that we are focusing on. Of course there’s government debt that traditionally the NDP have to eliminate once they get back into power.”

Dyck said the NDP is hosting a meeting at the Canalta Hotel in Melfort Oct. 18, starting at 7 p.m., and everyone is invited.

“There will be coffee and tea, and (people can) raise the issues that are important to all of us,” said Dyck. “We want to have this driven by people and what…people think.”

She said she’s excited to be a candidate and encourages everyone to think about the NDP and the NDP’s values when they cast their ballots in the Oct. 28 provincial election.

“Caring and sharing and reducing the cost of living.”
