Tisdale town employees being forced to move after mould findings

Oct 25, 2024 | 7:00 AM

The Town of Tisdale has been forced to scramble after a mould and air quality test at the Civic Centre auditorium, town office, Legion room, and NewSask office.

The samples revealed a spore concentration above the recommended threshold in both the Legion Room and the north basement.

Town CAO Lovely Magnaye told northeastNOW those areas are now restricted and only people wearing proper respirators can enter.

The levels at the town office are not as high, but it has been deemed an Occupational Health and Safety concern for town employees as prolonged exposure to spores could lead to health problems.

Because of this, council has decided to relocate the Administration Office to the Hanover Room at the RECPlex. The Recreation Department will be relocated to the RECPlex as well, going to the Recreation Office. The Director of Public Works will be relocated to the Public Works shop.

Council also authorized that Administration informs the tenants of the situation, and possible termination of the lease agreement. Service groups can use the Tisdale room at no cost until Dec. 31, and the Civic Centre Auditorium will be closed to the public Jan. 1. The decision on Civic Centre bookings will be re-visited at the next council meeting Monday, Oct. 28.

Magnaye said there are many logistics that need to be solidified before the admin office and recreation department staff move to the RECPlex, including computer networks and internet connections. She added the recommendation with the mould testing is for staff not to return until remediation is done.

“If the new council (to be elected Nov. 13) decides that they will do the remediation, then we probably have to go back,” explained Magnaye.

She said that plan has not been discussed as it will be brought up with the new council.
