The Melfort Mustangs’ winning streak came to an end on the weekend on their southern road swing.

The trip started with a 4-3 victory in Estevan Friday night.

Reilly Kotai scored the lone goal in the first period.

Zac Somers made it 2-0 Mustangs before the Bruins responded on a goal from Carter Onrait.

Austin Shepherd restored the two-goal lead for the Mustangs as the period ended.

Estevan battled back to tie the game with just over six minutes left, but Kotai scored his second of the game 22 seconds later to give the Mustangs the lead, and they held on for the 4-3 win.

Madden Mulawka made 29 saves for Melfort in the win.

The following night, the Mustangs saw their five-game winning streak stopped by a 5-3 loss to the Weyburn Red Wings.

The Wings stormed out to a 3-0 lead before Ty Thornton of the Mustangs scored a power-play goal with two seconds left in the first period.

Melfort moved to within one after a Zayden Sadlemyer power-play goal midway through the second period, but Weyburn restored its two-goal lead as the period ended.

Nolan Roberts scored for the Mustangs with just over two minutes remaining, but an empty net goal sealed the victory for the Red Wings.

Melfort outshot the Wings 46-27, including 33-16 in the last two periods.

The Mustangs will host Flin Flon on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, Melfort has fallen four spots in the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) Top 20 rankings.

The Mustangs are now number 12 in the nation, after climbing to eighth last week.

The Weyburn Red Wings have cracked the list and are ranked number 20, while Melville is an honourable mention.
