A baseball player from Muenster has been honoured as Baseball Sask’s 2024 Male Player of the Year.

Right-handed pitcher Merek Yeager received the award at an event late last month.

“It’s awesome,” Yeager told northeastNOW. “It’s just finally come to a point where it’s like my hard work has paid off and it means everything to me.”

Yeager said people have seen the hard work he has put in, and he’s happy to accept the award.

Yeager helped Saskatchewan finish fourth at the Baseball Canada Cup in 2024, then went to Toronto for the Blue Jays Academy Canadian Futures Showcase. He also pitched for the Baseball Canada Junior National Team.

“It’s been a pretty eventful year so far, but it’s been really successful for me,” said Yeager.

He will take part in the Western Canadian Baseball League’s (WCBL) Saskatoon Berries academy and will likely play for the squad in the upcoming WCBL season this summer. After that, Yeager will be attending Hutchinson Community College in Kansas where he will play baseball and take courses in the medicine, health, or kinesiology field.

Yeager said his strong work ethic has helped him move closer to the pitcher he wants to be, while his desire motivated him to play for the Junior National Team.

As for his future plans?

“Ultimately, I would love to be drafted,” said Yeager. “That would be the ultimate goal. Hopefully get there and work my way up and see how far I can get it. I have lots of potential, so I don’t want to waste it; I just want to see how far I can get with it and ride it out as long as I can.”
