Adrian Bourgeois seeking spot on Melfort council

Nov 9, 2024 | 8:00 AM

A long-time high school teacher in Melfort is looking for a spot on council.

Adrian Bourgeois has been the band teacher at MUCC for 29 years and said he is a user and a supporter of the multiple facilities in the city and understands their importance to Melfort.

Bourgeois said he is an avid downhill skier and downhill ski coach and loves working with the Adaptive Ski program for people living with disabilities participating in Alpine skiing. Bourgeois is currently the chair of Wapiti Regional Park and spends time in the North East Community Band.

Safety is a major topic of concern for Bourgeois, and it was also a large topic of discussion during Wednesday’s all-candidates forum.

“I feel if the council works alongside the RCMP, a plan can be put in place that helps the police deal with crime, and have people in the community feel as though they are also part of the solution,” said Bourgeois.

Bourgeois said the city also needs to ensure facilities are well-maintained and locations like the ball diamonds are rejuvenated, and added working with community groups and users could be a way to help keep sites looking their best.

“We have to ensure the facilities are regularly maintained to ensure longer life of the facility,” said Bourgeois. “Small regular maintenance ensures longer life of the facility.”

As an example, Bourgeois used his vehicle with 320,000 km on it. He said the vehicle has been well-maintained and that has helped to extend its life.

Bourgeois said he would like an expansion of tourism opportunities in the area, including highlighting enticements like Wapiti, the skate park, ball diamonds, soccer pitches, and more.

There are other business needs in Melfort in his mind.

“How can we entice another hotel to come to the community? How can we entice a sports store to come to the community?”

Bourgeois said the two are important in supporting tourism opportunities.

As a councillor, Bourgeois said he would work hard with the other council members and the mayor to ensure tax dollars are spent as efficiently as possible.

“If we can deal with safety issues at different levels, we can be more efficient with the tax dollars, not having to deal with vandalism repairs, not having to deal with theft as rampant, and just having everyone work together to have a great city.”

The municipal election is Nov. 13.
