Trent Mitchell hoping for three-peat as he seeks Melfort council seat

An incumbent councillor is looking for a third term on council in Melfort.

Trent Mitchell was first elected in 2016 and was re-elected in 2020.

Mitchell told northeastNOW he hopes to make a return to council chambers.

“I have enjoyed my time on council,” Mitchell explained. “I feel strongly about supporting my community and believe being on council is a way to enact positive change.”

Mitchell said the operations of the city are complex and it takes some time to learn. He added he is still learning despite being on council for eight years.

“That said, the experience and knowledge I have gained will allow for continued growth and decision making going forward,” said Mitchell.

Two of the major topics that are affecting the city at the moment, according to Mitchell, are infrastructure and affordability. He said it’s important to invest in the establishment and maintenance of infrastructure and recreation facilities, and at the same time minimize the burden on taxpayers.

Mitchell said a catalogue of city assets and their condition was completed in the last term of council. He said the results were as expected, that many city-owned facilities are in need of some TLC.

“Much of the infrastructure is aged and in need of significant investments,” said Mitchell. “The positive is that we have the necessary information to build a plan to address these deficits.”

Mitchell said having the information ready will make it easier to apply for any federal grants that may become available to help subsidize the maintenance. He added in the meantime the city also needs to continue to address deficiencies as the budget will allow.

The need for continued economic development is also a must for Melfort, according to Mitchell. He said business growth adds job opportunities that keep and grow the population.

Mitchell said the city also needs to continue to find efficiencies as they can to help keep things affordable in light of inflationary pressures.

“I believe this coming budget will be one of the most challenging,” said Mitchell.

He said a deep dive into budget and spending needs has to take place, and a review of services and associated fees is also required.

Mitchell is among the nine candidates for councillor in Melfort.
